The Sagrada Família kicked off Sant Jordi celebrations the evening before with a special after-hours tour of the Basilica for 180 people, with various time slots between 8:30 pm to 10:00 pm on 22 April.

The lucky visitors who got to see the Temple at dusk were the winners of a draw held on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

In addition to this special tour, the Sagrada Família also hosted other events to commemorate the day with the people.

First, “Sant Jordi at the Sagrada Família, roses to remember”: a tour and workshop for elderly residents in the Sagrada Família neighbourhood and the Associació Amics de la Gent Gran, highlighting light as hope, the colour of the stained-glass windows and roses. Participants discovered the importance of light and its meaning full of hope and vitality. Then they took part in an art workshop to create plexiglass roses. These roses were used to create an art installation, which the lucky winners of the after-hours tour got to see, displayed next to the sculpture of Saint George on the Jubé balcony.

This action was part of the goal to make the Sagrada Família more accessible and welcoming to all, as Pope Francis said: “Don’t forget our elders. A tree without roots cannot grow, cannot flower. We cannot turn our backs on the elderly. They aren’t disposable; they’re living memory. From them comes the sap that makes everything grow.” At the Basilica, we strive to continue working to care for the elderly and, through art and culture, make them feel special.

Additionally, as is tradition on 23 April the feast day of Sant Jordi, anyone named Jordi or Jordina got to visit the Basilica for free, without having to book.
