angle-left Sagrada Família holds Open Doors Days

The Sagrada Família has again held its annual Open Doors Days, which invite the people to visit the Temple, during Barcelona’s main feast day, the La Mercè festivities. On 23, 24 and 25 September, a total of 15,000 people visited the Basilica for free and got to see how the works are progressing.

This time, the winners of the draw got the chance to visit the Basilica and see the tetramorph figures that will crown the towers of the Evangelists Luke and Mark, which will surround the tower of Jesus Christ, and find out how they are being built in an audiovisual piece.

As part of the central group of towers, the four towers of the Evangelists will surround the tower of Jesus Christ, standing 135 metres tall once finished. To identify which evangelist each tower represents, there will be sculptures with the figure of the tetramorph, with a book and wings. These figures have been used for centuries to represent the evangelists in Christian iconography, art and architecture. So, the tower of the Evangelist Mark will be crowned with a sculpture of a winged lion, a symbol of power, courage and royalty; and the tower of the Evangelist Luke will be topped with a sculpture of a winged ox, a calm, humble beast of burden.

As announced at the press conference on 21 September, the Sagrada Família expects to finish the two towers this year.
