angle-left Towers of the Evangelists lit up for first time

The Sagrada Família commemorated the completion of the towers of the Evangelists with a mass and then the blessing and illumination of all four pinnacles for the first time.

At 5:30 pm, inside the Basilica, the Apostolic Nuncio Mons. Bernardito Auza led a solemn mass with the Cardinal Joan Josep Omella i Omella, Cardinal Lluís Martínez Sistach and Auxiliary Bishop of Barcelona, Mons. David Abadías, and then blessed the four towers of the Evangelists. Afterwards the towers of Luke, Mark, Matthew and John were lit up, followed by the star on the tower of the Virgin Mary and the Nativity and Passion façades. The lightings were visible from the street or online and will be repeated daily through Christmas.

The four towers are crowned with the four winged figures of the tetramorph, by sculptor Xavier Medina-Campeny, which Christian iconography has used to represent the men who told the story of Jesus’ life. This year saw the completion of the tower of the Evangelist Matthew, represented by a human figure, and the tower of the Evangelist John, with the figure of an eagle. In 2022, the towers of Mark, represented by a lion, and Luke, represented by an ox, were finished.

As part of the central group of towers, the towers of the Evangelists surround the tower of Jesus Christ, standing 135 metres tall. This makes them the third tallest at the Temple.

The Sagrada Família is grateful for the public outpouring for this milestone and the celebrations, to everyone who visits us every day, from here and all over the world, and especially the people of Barcelona.

Human castles at the Sagrada Família, another celebration this weekend

This Saturday, 11 November at 11:00 am, outside the Nativity façade, there were human towers with four groups from the city: Castellers de la Sagrada Família, with Castellers de Sants, Castellers de Sarrià and Colla Castellera de l’Esquerra de l’Eixample.

The event kicked off with the host group, Castellers de la Sagrada Família, and then the guest groups took turns to complete their towers.

To finish off the event, the four groups simultaneously built four pillars, representing the four towers of the Evangelists.

Throughout November there will be more events to celebrate the completion of the towers of the Evangelists with the people. More information here: https://sagradafamilia.org/en/towers-evangelists.
