Barcelona, 17 July 2026 - This evening, the Basilica of the Sagrada Família hosted Arrels de llum (Roots of light), an artistic proposal that invites us to immerse ourselves in a universe inspired by spirituality, nature and light.
The joint production with Grec Festival Barcelona that featured Cor Cererols, conducted by Marc Díaz, and the voices of Lídia Pujol and Maria Arnal in a concert created specially for this space.
The initiative is part of a particularly important year for the Basilica and the city of Barcelona, coinciding with the hundredth anniversary of Antoni Gaudí’s death, the 50th anniversary of Grec Festival Barcelona and the completion of the tower of Jesus Christ. To celebrate these three milestones, the Sagrada Família and Grec came up with an artistic proposal connecting heritage and contemporary creation. A musical production created specially for the occasion, Arrels de llum combined sacred singing and soloists in a journey that connected traditional Catalan music and new forms of artistic expression. The project drew inspiration from some of the most characteristic elements of Gaudí’s universe, such as spirituality, nature, light and music, which are also found in the architectural concept for the Basilica.
The Delegate President of the Sagrada Família Construction Board, Mr Esteve Camps, addressed the audience at the beginning of the event, which also included remarks by the Honourable Xavier Marcé, Councillor for Culture and Creative Industries at Barcelona City Council.
At the end of the concert, Esteve Camps presented a commemorative gift to Ms Leticia Martín, Director of Grec Festival de Barcelona, in recognition of the festival’s 50-year history and its contribution to raising Barcelona’s cultural profile. The event was attended by a number of representatives from the institutional and cultural sectors.
The concert title, Arrels de llum (Roots of light), refers to two of the most representative elements of the Temple: the light that streams in through the stained-glass windows and transforms the interior, and the tower of Jesus Christ, finished this year, which marks a new stage in construction of the Basilica.
With this collaboration, the Sagrada Família and Grec Festival Barcelona furthered their commitment to projects that link heritage, music and artistic creation, and that open up the Basilica to new cultural events in a year that is particularly important to Gaudí’s legacy.
