angle-left Sagrada Família gets new tactile models to improve accessibility

The Sagrada Família, in line with its commitment to improving accessibility and desire to provide equal opportunities for everyone, inaugurated new tactile models in the “Central towers” room on Tuesday 17 September.

This space features reproductions of the six central lanterns and the first to explore them were a group of fifty members of the ONCE Foundation with visual impairments. The models include the towers of the Evangelists, the tower of Jesus Christ with its cross pinnacle and the tactile model of the tower of the Virgin Mary inaugurated in 2022.

This initiative offers a unique, enriching experience for blind people and is a significant step forward in cultural accessibility, symbolic of a strong commitment to social inclusion. It not only allows people with visual impairments to ‘see’ the shapes and structures of the towers, it also allows them to better understand their religious symbology and Gaudí’s architectural vision.

The participants also visited the museum’s main hall “Inspiration in Nature”, which has three new tactile elements that complement the three elements taken from nature that are behind glass and can’t be touched.

Mr Esteve Camps, Executive Chairman of the Junta Constructora de la Sagrada Família; Ms Núria Vendrell, member of the Junta Constructora Board of Trustees; Mr Xavier Martínez, General Director of the Basilica; Mr Enric Botí, ONCE territorial delegate in Catalonia; and Ms María de la Sierra López, vice-president of the ONCE Territorial Council in Catalonia, attended the event.
