This Saturday, 10 October, the Basilica of the Sagrada Família hosted a mass for the 125th anniversary of the Carmelite Sisters of Saint Joseph. The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Cardinal Joan Josep Omella, Archbishop of Barcelona and ex officio President of the Construction Board Foundation of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Família, and concelebrated by Archbishop and Bishop Emeritus of Urgell, Mons. Joan-Enric Vives, and Fr Agustí Borrell, Vicar General of the Discalced Carmelites.
The celebration was attended by Mr Esteve Camps, Executive President of the Construction Board of the Sagrada Família; Sr Susana García del Álamo, Superior General of the Carmelite Sisters of Saint Joseph; and other councillors and local superiors of the congregation.
The Carmelite Sisters of Saint Joseph were established in Barcelona on 10 October 1900 by Mother Rosa Ojeda i Creus, with support from Bishop Josep Morgades. From the beginning, the congregation’s mission has been to serve those most in need, particularly the infirm, the elderly and children, taking inspiration from the Spirit of Carmel and following the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
This celebration rounded out the commemorative events for the 125th anniversary, highlighting the order’s important work in providing aid, education and pastoral care.
