Valls paid tribute to Antoni Gaudí this Saturday, September 5, with an institutional and popular ceremony at the Basilica of the Sagrada Família. Organised by Valls City Council in collaboration with the Board of the Sagrada Família, the event commemorated the historic relationship between the architect, the basilica and the capital of the Alt Camp region.

The day began in front of the Nativity Façade with a performance by the Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls and the Colla Joves Xiquets de Valls, followed by an institutional ceremony and an address by Dr Armand Puig and the mayoress of Valls, Ilma. Dolors Farré. Ramon Bassas, general director of religious affairs of the Generalitat de Catalunya, as well as deputy mayors and councilors from the Valls City Council also attended.

Later, during the international Mass, the two groups simultaneously built castells inside the basilica, creating a symbolic image of the encounter between Gaudí’s architecture and the world of castells.

The tribute concluded in the crypt, in front of Gaudí’s tomb, with a floral tribute from the city and two five-storey human towers.
