Barcelona Symphonic Band debuts at the Basilica

On Saturday, 4 November, the Basilica was filled with the music of the Barcelona Symphonic Band, making its debut at the Sagrada Família. The concert kicked off the programme of events to celebrate the completion of the towers of the Evangelists. 

Led by head conductor José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana, the “Between heaven and earth” concert featured a repertoire chosen for the occasion paying tribute to the symbiosis of nature, faith and art represented in the Sagrada Família. 

“Between heaven and earth” was a musical tribute to the intention behind Gaudí’s architecture. With pieces like The Bells of Sagrada Família by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa, a musical allegory of Gaudí’s design; O magnum mysterium, by Morten Lauridsen, which they dedicated to the Nativity façade; and David Maslanka’s Requiem, for the Passion façade. The Band also performed Chorale and Alleluia by Howard Hanson, for the Glory façade, and continued with Kathryn Salfelder’s Cathedrals and Johan De Meij’s Echoes of San Marco before finishing off with “El Cant dels Ocells” from the suite Vuit Cançons Populars Catalanes by Miguel Asins Arbó. 

The Sagrada Família invited everyone to enjoy this concert, giving out 640 tickets through a draw that received entries from 42,798 people using the form available on the Sagrada Família website and social media.
